The basket weaver hails from Bastar, in the state of Chhattisgarh (Central India). Basket weaving is a widely practised tribal craft where bamboo is used to make different types of baskets, fans, mats etc are made.
The painting depicts a tribal woman dressed in saree and traditional silver jewellery (toe rings, nose ring, earrings and all…) seriously working at weaving a basket.
The painting has never been re-touched hence some scratches are very visible.
